As the conversation around lifelong learning, net zero and workforce development gains momentum, it’s encouraging to see universities stepping up to offer accessible, flexible learning to those already working in industry. This is especially critical for regions like South Wales, where engineering and manufacturing remain the backbone of the economy – and where the shift to more sustainable practices must be met with the right skills and support.

At SWITCH On Skills, a UKSPF funded project based at Swansea University, we’re focused on delivering fully funded and accredited online courses tailored to help local employees in engineering and manufacturing sectors and beyond transition towards net zero. But like many forward-thinking initiatives, we face two core challenges:

1. Ensuring the right people know this opportunity exists – and understand its value
2. Creating a seamless and supportive experience from initial interest to course completion

So, what are we doing to meet these challenges head-on?

Visibility and Viability

Getting the word out to the right people in the right way is critical. Here’s how we’re raising awareness and building momentum:

  • Announcing our recent funding approval via our website and across our social media channels to reach as many stakeholders as possible.
  • Actively showcasing our project at both internal university events and external conferences and exhibitions.
  • Participating in networking events and knowledge-sharing workshops with other funded projects to boost cross-promotion and collaboration.
  • Engaging directly with local industry leaders and businesses to highlight courses most relevant for their workforce.
  • Creating targeted case studies and testimonials that illustrate the real-world impact of our courses.
  • Building relationships with local FE colleges, trade associations and training providers to expand our reach within the South Wales skills ecosystem.
  • Collaborating with local media outlets (e.g., business newsletters, radio) to share success stories and course updates more widely.
  • Running webinars or virtual taster sessions to give employers and learners a glimpse of what our courses offer before they commit.

Learner Experience and Support

Our goal is to make every learner’s journey as smooth, supportive and empowering as possible:

  • Providing friendly and fast responses to enquiries, whether from industry contacts or individual learners.
  • Maintaining a warm and approachable tone in all communications, internally and externally.
  • Offering clear, accessible instructions via our virtual learning environment, with structured pathways that are easy to follow.
  • Developing professional-quality teaching materials that guide learners through complex topics with confidence.
  • Running optional support sessions for learners who want extra help at key stages.
  • Continuously improving our courses based on feedback and the latest developments in sustainability and engineering.
  • Monitoring learner progress and reaching out with encouragement or assistance when needed.
  • Recognising achievements along the way to help learners stay motivated and feel proud of their progress.
  • Embedding short feedback polls after courses to identify areas of improvement and best practice.
  • Providing a dedicated lecturer and learning technologists as a point of contact to offer continuity and personalised support throughout the course.

This is about more than just online delivery. It’s about building trust, relevance and real value for working professionals who want to grow their careers and contribute meaningfully to the green transition.

We’re proud of the work we’ve done so far – but even more excited about what’s still to come.

What are you doing to support lifelong learning and net zero skills in your organisation or community? We would love to hear from you.
